What Does "Manifest" Even Mean?

By Amber Ellis Johnson

Manifestation is not magic, although when you are doing it, it can feel that way...meaning Easy. It can feel easy to get what you want when you are manifesting. So what is it then? Let's look at what it actually means to manifest something you want, and practically, how to do it.

  • The definition of manifest (verb) is "to display or show (a quality or feeling) by one's acts/actions; to demonstrate." Oxford

  • Another definition is "to make clear, evident or certain by display."

  • And yet another is more spiritual, "something theoretical made real."

Mulling over the meanings of the word helps to give this cultural term more context. It is not a mystical occurance one merely hopes for, prays for or wishes would happen some day.

Manifesting what you want is about feeling your power, making a plan, and taking action, over and over and over. Rather than becoming passive, seeing what comes to you and letting whim or fleeting motivation/fancy/inspiration carry you along from thing to thing, and letting that initial motivator peter out over time, manifestation is about problem solving, constantly reflecting, improving, trying new things, creating your own self driven motivation, and re-creating it anew each time it wanes. Mainfestation is about discipline, in the most loving, responsible sense of the term, and the wonderful addadge that discipline equals freedom rings quite true. Manifestation is "active love,"as Dostoevsky says in :The Brothers Karamazov."

To manifest your biggest, wildest dreams, you must believe in yourself, in your ability to achieve it. Journaling a deep ENVISIONING of the life you want, what exactly it looks like, feels like, getting detailed about it, is one way in.

There are other ways in. Meditation. Prayer. Actual dreams while sleeping. Being more visual/symbolic and creating a vision board. Noticing when your body is giving you YES signals. Noticing your own jealously, envy, or fear can direct you to DEEP desires. Getting clear about what you want, and why, helps to focus your energy, give yourself validation and permission to manifest it. Read more about about self-validation and permission in the blog post "Tending the Garden."

What will it take to make your vision real? Remember that manifestation, by definition, is about action, demonstrating something. Turning your idea, theory, into reality by living it.

Think through and write out the steps you imagine are involved. Talk to others, ask trusted mentors, research and learn all you can about this part. Get as much experience and context as possible to understand the journey, and what to expect. Then make your first move, the small first step on the path toward what you want.

This small first step might be the hardest, bravest thing you've ever done. Good. Take the risk!

Believe in yourself.

Make space in your life for this step and show up for it as priority #1. Yes, you may need to compromise and make some sacrifices elsewhere to make space. Come to terms with not being able to DO IT ALL at one time, and that some things will have to wait while you figure out your new reality, your new mode of being. BUT... this is non negotiable! Your dream/vision/desire for your life is valid and so important that you are allowed to prioritize it. No one has the authority to degrade or devalue your vision of your life. It's yours alone. Feel your power here. Even if you are a mother; especially if you are a mother.

Once you have mastered managing your first step, immediately tackle the next. Always striving toward progress. This part takes the most time and consistency to see progress unfold. This is where discipline comes in.

In service of manifesting your dream, you show up whether or not you feel like it. This is discipline: acting out a healthy habit regardless of feeling motivated. Inspired motivation matters very little over the long term, and if you must feel a big motivation feeling, and it isn't there, create motivation for yourself! Make it fun, do whatever you need to do to get her done. Sometimes you may need to to lean on external motivation to get her done. Examples of external motivation are music, fun new clothes or shoes, gadgets, tech, gummy bears!, signing up for a classes or personal trainer or mentor, buying a program, asking a friend to join you, writing things down on paper, announcing them publicly, signing up for a race or competition, all of these things are externally motivating.

You will not always needs external motivation! These are tools in service of building up your internal motivation, habits, and discipline you will be able to lean on your whole life. Having as many tools in your toolbox to pull out and use at will is one way to build will power! Like in Rea's awesome article about herbals to support your energy while manifesting, we can choose to clear our heavy or negative energy to make it easier to manifest and take action. Joining others in community like in our monthly full moon women's circle, MANIFEST, is another awesome tool to refocus, to lighten our energetic load to make space to manifest, to support each other, to celebrate our work, and to feel connected. The steps you take are manifestation, not the very ultimate end goal.

Manifesting is not immediate. People generally give up before their progress is actualized, having an inaccurate understanding of how long it takes to get there. Be realistic in your expectations, and re-assess your steps and how much space in your life can be given to your project to see if there is any way to speed it up. There may be a simple way, or there may not. It matters little! Because the joy, satisfaction, and fulfillment of living as an empowered individual, making choices through actively loving yourself through the journey of manifesting your life, is beautiful. Extraordinary.

So, Manifest your life through loving discipline, my friends. Because discipline equals freedom in the deepest, most pure sense.

The freedom to achieve.

The freedom from whim and fancy that wanes.

The freedom to manifest anything you want in your life, and to love yourself enough to not give up.

Trust me, it's true,

Amber
